Abstract

The articles in this volume come from the section »Historical Pragmatics and Historical Variety Linguistics. Scientific Practice and Methodology - Divergences and Convergences «, which will be presented on September 29th and 30th, 2003 at XXVIII. German Romanistentag took place in Kiel. The conception and planning of this section was based on the insight that historical pragmatics and historical variety linguistics have numerous points of contact and overlap in their objects and methods, but have developed in quite different ways institutionally and in their research traditions. Against this background, the section's contributions aim to name and comment on the convergences and divergences of the two disciplines within the framework of a reflected dialogue.

Abstract

The volume consists of papers prepared for the International Symposium of Chadic Linguistics (Boulder, Colorado, May 1-2, 1987). Although the papers are representative of the current work being done in the field of Chadic linguistics, they also reflect the current and past interests and methodologies of general linguistics. The papers included in the volume should therefore be of interest to a general linguist as much as to the Chadicist or a specialist in some other Afroasiatic branch. The papers are grouped by the areas of linguistic fields and methodologies.

The syntax contributions principally treat infinitival clauses, extraction phenomena, and binding. While synchronic data serve as the point of departure in most of the studies, historical perspectives are also considered in each major section. Included in the volume are two invited contributions,

Abstract

This volume contains 23 papers selected from those presented at the 22nd Linguistic Symposium on Romance Languages. The papers address issues in phonology, morphology, syntax/semantics from contemporary theoretical perspectives. In addition, in keeping with the symposium's US-Mexico location and commemoration of the twin quincentenaries of Columbus' first voyage and the publication of Nebrija's grammar, several papers focus on the history of linguistic theory, language contact, variation, and change.
